Open Source Development

All technology solutions built directly by HDR UK are shared open source, with permissive licenses, open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), robust documentation, and modular design to encourage and support co-creation and community development.

Principles for Development

Our development principles are for all organisations involved with Health Data Research UK (including Health Data Research Hubs, members of the UK Health Data Research Alliance, or organisations using data).

The development principles draw on national, international and industry best practice frameworks and recommendations. They will guide working practices and should be reinforced through specific agreements through which organisations will engage with each other. To read our principles in more detail, click here.

Built for collaboration

We see the Gateway as a collaborative platform, not solely developed by HDR UK. With its new modular design and open-source code, other technical teams can use and contribute to it. Our aim is to create an open development model where the community develops new features that are integrated into the Gateway. We are encouraging collaboration across the wider technology ecosystem to ensure we build upon existing technical solutions and speed up improvements to the Gateway and the researcher tools and services.

We are currently developing documentation for how we would like to collaborate with others using an open development model. In the meantime, please feel free to contact us through our Support Centre to discuss any potential projects or ideas for collaborations.
