Lay summary

There is a crucial need to understand the relationship between severity of symptoms (as measured in a survey) and COVID-19 so as to be able to use data (mostly from surveys) that mostly track symptoms. Such data should allow to better understand typical interval distributions between infection, contagiosity, and hospitalisation. This understanding is critical to calibrate epidemiological models that are used to specialize (age, region, context...) social distancing campaigns. It is important to outline that while one the objective of C-19 Symptom Tracker App was to map the spread and impact of COVID-19 across a country (UK in this case), the objective of the current study does NOT focus on the spread of COVID over time/area. Instead its interest is on the RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN symptom severity / risk factors AND positiveness of COVID-19 test. The data gathered by the App shall provide such statistics which is, to some extent, NOT SPECIFIC to the existing studied cohort (UK in this case).

Public benefit statement

Specifically this project aims to provide longitudinal statistics to the community about severity of symptoms. Anticipated outcomes of the project are the calibration (made possible by this study) of epidemiological models to the current pandemic. Such models should help taking more specialized decisions in France (but also in other countries as the better understanding of the dynamic of COVID pandemic is, to some extent, valid for all countries) for social distancing. The objective is to be ready for the second wave.
