A renal medicine review has shown considerable variation in the time taken between admission to non-renal centres with an acute kidney injury (AKI) episode and transfer to a renal centre for specialist input. There are concerns about delays in transfer of patients. It is unclear what the impact of delays in inter-hospital transfers are on clinical outcomes for AKI patients requiring specialist renal input and/or acute dialysis and this is something that the UK renal community needs to address. We will • calculate national variation in time taken from AKI alert at a non-renal centre to transfer to renal centre • look at age, sex, ethnicity, survival prior to transfer • compare outcomes – length of stay, 30 day mortality, need for dialysis at 90 days We aim to map the “patient journey” and create a reliable timeline of admission, interhospital transfer, critical care stays and commencement of dialysis. Describing the time from admission with an AKI episode to specialist care would be very valuable to patients especially if the length of time taken to access care is linked to survival or other clinical outcomes.
