Lay summary

Due to growing concerns about climate change, there is currently much interest in the health impacts of hot weather. High ambient temperature is increasingly recognised as a risk factor for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI); however, this has not been extensively explored in the UK setting. We would like to explore factors relating to heat risk such as age, ethnicity, and deprivation, for all AKI episodes for as many years as data is available. The years 2018 and 2020 were both associated with hot summers. Identification of high-risk patients is crucial for targeted intervention measures designed to reduce the health burdens of current and future hot weather. We will identify associations between heat stress and AKI, including thresholds of temperature at which adverse effects become apparent, which can inform the UK Health Security Agency heat-plan as well as other intervention measures. Patients can be advised to undertake preventative measures whenever hot weather is forecast.
