Lay summary
Emergency Hospitalisation in patients with kidney failure who are receiving dialysis or transplantation is associated with significant financial costs to the healthcare system and emotional cost to patients and caregivers. The annual emergency hospitalisation rate for patients with kidney failure in England is currently unknown. We aim to describe trends in emergency hospitalisation amongst kidney failure patients between 2013-2017, patterns of demography, centre variation and most common diagnoses. Describing the burden of emergency hospitalisation in kidney failure patients and the cause behind this is the essential first step towards developing targeted quality improvement initiatives.
