UK Renal Registry data have shown that there is variation between renal centres in the UK in terms of patient survival in the year after the first 90 days of dialysis. Research by Fotheringham et al has shown that variation between renal centres in England is explained by information from hospitalisation data about the presence of other diseases (comorbidity). We need to confirm this finding in more recent UK Renal Registry data and include Welsh patients in the analyses. Risk factors to be considered are age, gender, ethnicity, primary renal diagnosis and comorbidity. Centres with a lower than expected survival will be correctly identified, required to investigate rates and causes of death, and implement improvement strategies in the centre.
