Lay summary

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) affects millions of people across the UK and can result in a range of costly complications for the NHS. A study of data from 2009-10 estimated the cost of CKD to be over £1.4 billion. We propose to provide updated estimates of costs in more recent years before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study will be important in helping policymakers prepare the provision of NHS services for people with kidney disease in the coming years. This study will be carried out by linking hospital data and UK Renal Registry (UKRR) data to patients’ GP records. This study will help understand the costs of CKD to the NHS, as well as the impact on this due to health problems and service disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This will allow policymakers to be able to better plan services for people with kidney disease for the future.
