Variation of AKI incident rate

There is a lot of variation across different regions in the UK in the rates at which hospitals identify and accurately code new cases of acute kidney injury (AKI). Many things could be contributing to the variation, including differences in local practices and/or differences in the populations in each region. This study aims to use a statistical method, applied in a previous paper for identification of chronic kidney disease in GP practices, to help understand why there are such significant differences between regions when it comes to acute kidney injury. We will look at patterns of, and variations in, identification and coding of AKI across different kidney treatment centres. We will also look at the number of patients admitted to each hospital by age, sex and deprivation indices. Identifying extreme outliers at hospitals/trusts can help explain the reasons why these trusts had extremely high or low AKI rates compared to other trusts. This understanding can help them improve local practices which could lead to improved outcomes for patients.
