Lay summary

Acute kidney injury (AKI) - a sudden decrease in kidney function - affects over 500,000 patients in England each year. Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) is a national programme designed to improve the treatment and care of patients through in-depth review of services, benchmarking, and presenting a data-driven evidence base to support change. GIRFT feels it likely that care of patients with AKI across acute hospital trusts in England will serve as an important patient safety indicator. Previous studies have highlighted that improvements in AKI care lead to reductions in hospital length of stay for patients. In this project we will look for unusual variations in length of stay for patients across acute hospital trusts in England. We will look for the characteristics of patients who are at highest risk of the longest hospital stays. This work will allow for targeted quality improvement interventions to reduce length of stay for patients with AKI in England.
