The primary clinical manifestation of COVID-19 is a respiratory infection. Severity of symptoms range from mild to severe to death. COVID-19 affects patients with pre-existing comorbidities, including kidney disease, more than normal. Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are very vulnerable to the severe symptoms and outcomes of the disease, because of their older age and high frequency of co-existing clinical conditions, including diabetes and hypertension. This study will link UK Renal Registry (UKRR) COVID-19 data to both the most up to date Public Health England (PHE) swab tests data and Hospital Episode Statistics to compare risk for both COVID-19 infection and mortality in patients receiving KRT and to investigate risk factors. It also enables comparisons across kidney replacement therapy (KRT) modalities in England. We expect to include more than 2600 patients in the study. The study will allow a more reliable analysis of the COVID-19 outcomes for patients on KRT in England and if these differ by KRT modality.
