WSIC asthma radar high risk reviews
Public benefit statement
In response to the tragic death of two children in NWL from asthma in the last 9 months, retrospective review suggests there was evidence on the WSIC radar to identify these patients as being at high risk. Thus the aim of this service improvement project is to evaluate the WSIC asthma radar data for children and young people (CYP) in North West London who are at high risk of a serious asthma attack at borough, primary care network (PCN) and GP practice level. We will then mandate an appropriate response from primary care providers to ensure these children are reviewed. Primary care will be supported by our borough led asthma teams in this process. Our request is for the de-identified data on all fields within the WSIC asthma radar for CYP for ages 4 years to 17 years for North West London, categorised by borough, primary care network (PCN) and GP practice level, and also by age. We will refine searches using this data to calculate levels of risk and urgency in service response. We will review the data at regular intervals, to establish that CYP have been reviewed at a population level. For example if 10 patients are identified as being at very high risk in one particular PCN, and none have had an asthma review, we can monitor WSIC to check this process has been actioned.
