Public benefit statement

We recently received MRC funding for a consolidator grant to develop a full programme proposal to address the problem of multimorbidity (MM) in the UK that emanates from the combination of diabetes/pre-diabetes, hypertension, and depression. This work will include an epidemiology stream to characterize the types, progression and sequence of MM across life stages as well as a natural experimental studies stream to examine the impact of ongoing NHS lifestyle change initiatives (National Diabetes Prevention Programme and REWIND-for Diabetes Remission) to estimate long-term intervention impact on MM. WSIC can play a key role in both the epidemiology and natural experiments work streams, providing population-based data on the prevalence, incidence, and transitions of multimorbidity and the impact of ongoing lifestyle interventions targeting people at risk for diabetes and with diabetes. This current request is for data to provide pilot data and descriptive estimates of the NW London population for the submission of our full programme proposal. The specific aims of the analyses for the 6 month period of analysis of the WSIC data are to: 1) Examine the prevalence, incidence, and reversibility of major forms of diabetes-driven multimorbidity in the Northwest London population according to age and risk factor status. 2) Examine the prevalence and characteristics of adults in Northwest London who are eligible for the NHS National Diabetes Prevention Program and Diabetes Remission (REWND) initiatives. 3) Changes in glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors over the period of the COVID-19 health services disruption to assess potential bias and confounding in the data. If it is also feasible to link WSIC data to ICS dashboard data related to the NDPP and REWIND participation, a third aim will compare the patient characteristics, risk factor levels, body weight, and weight change between intervention participants and the WSIC population. These analyses are ultimately intended to provide the pilot data for our full programme proposal.
