Lay summary
To correlate haematological and biochemical parameters with severity of illness in pregnant and recently pregnant women with COVID-19 illness and to compare these findings with those seen in non-pregnant women aged 18-60 with COVID-19.
Public benefit statement
Some infections, such as SARS-CoV-2 can affect pregnant women differently to non-pregnant women of reproductive age. Some of these differences may be apparent in bedside tests, such as in the measurement of the heart rate or blood pressure; other differences can be seen in blood tests. In non-pregnant women, such findings can usually give an indication of the severity of illness and thus can guide appropriate escalation of care. However, in healthy pregnancy, physiological changes occur which can mask severe disease. Analysis of the investigations performed in both pregnant and non-pregnant women positive for SARS-CoV-2 could give us a better understanding of biomarker correlates of severe clinical disease in pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period (upto six weeks after delivery). This will help clinicians during this pandemic to identify pregnant women at greater risk of requiring admission to the intensive care unit for assisted ventilation.
