The overall aim of this study is to provide evidence for how lung nodule surveillance pathways can be modified to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in diagnosing early lung cancers.
This study directly benefits patients as it objectively evaluates the real-world population of patients under pre-diagnostic surveillance. This has not yet been completed outside a cancer screening or cohorts which are pre-determined by set characteristics (e.g. age range, smoking status, or concurrent co-morbidities which prompted CT scans). Further understanding of this group and the influence of patient profile on variance in care is crucial to reducing health inequalities in access to early cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is also key to future understanding of how we target research to ensure that populations at risk are adequately represented in study design and further cancer treatment or lung nodule studies. The incorporation of WSIC data into this study adds a valuable facet in using the local population to develop more robust understanding of the patient profile and service usage.
