Lay summary
Understanding the risk factors associated with cardiovascular-related maternal death is necessary for the development of prevention strategies to reduce these staggering statistics.
Public benefit statement
Complications related to heart health are the main causes of ill health, and deaths, among new mothers in the United Kingdom. Mothers belonging to racial and ethnic minority groups are more likely to experience health problems during pregnancy; however, it is unclear how race and ethnicity are related specifically to UK mothers’ risk of heart health complications. This project investigates how race and ethnicity are linked to maternal heart health outcomes in the UK. It also strives to understand if race and ethnicity impact maternal heart health independently or in combination with other social and circumstantial factors. The outcomes of this project will contribute data that could be used to support quality improvement efforts to help reduce disparities in maternal complications and deaths in the UK.
