Patients and the public may benefit from better understanding of mechanism, risk stratification and prevention of COVID-19 and its complications.
Data from Public Health England demonstrates South Asians are at high risk of COVID-19. A large cross sectional observational study using data of 17 million people from the OpenSAFELY platform, reported a 1.7 fold increased risk of COVID-19 amongst South Asians (1). Furthermore, prospective data from the UK Biobank shows a 2.4 fold higher risk of severe COVID-19 amongst South Asians compared to Europeans (2). The reasons underlying the increased risk of COVID-19 amongst South Asians, who represent the largest ethnic minority in the UK, remains to be addressed.
