A large proportion of patients with inflammatory arthritis experience other long term health conditions, such as hypertension or depression. The presence of two or more long term health conditions (known as multimorbidity) among individuals with arthritis means that they can have complicated healthcare needs which result in increased visits to the doctor and unplanned stays in hospital.
In order for health services to meet the health needs of patients who experience inflammatory arthritis in conjunction with other chronic conditions the prevalence of multimorbidity among patients with arthritis, and its association with health service use and health outcomes must be better understood.
