Lay summary
The carers strategy aims to plan for better provision for carers for the next five years. To understand the current gaps in needs in service provision and to make recommendation on how statutory bodies can improve their identification of carers.
Public benefit statement
The strategy will allow us to develop a detailed picture on carers, such as how many are known carers, demographic characteristics, and existing health conditions. This will allow us to better target resources and make improvement in the way local authority and partners provide services for carers. It will enable local authority and partners to commission services for carers that is more tailored to their needs. And ultimately improve outcomes for carers. We acknowledge that a large proportion of unpaid carers are unknown to health services and therefore unrecorded. We therefore aim to utilise other data sources in addition to WSIC data, such as national data, reports from the voluntary sector and academic literature to triangulate findings. The limitations of the WSIC data will be clearly highlighted in the strategy.
