Lay summary

One of the key advantages of using WSIC data for this project, is that we can look at trends in multi-morbidity and frailty using the linked primary care record, which will give broader information on health status than the SUS data alone.

Public benefit statement

In response to rising pressures on NHS services, particularly in the urgent and emergency care system, this project aims to investigate factors related to these pressures. It will use the Whole System Integrated Care (WSIC) data from the integrated NHS care records for the population of northwest London to better understand the patterns of visits and readmissions to the urgent and emergency care system in northwest London and which population group and type of patients were likely to visit the urgent and emergency services. This information is important for two main reasons: one, it will prioritise support to urgent and emergency systems and areas/population groups in greater need. This can be external support, such as funding and capacity building, but also internal support, such as better management, policies and systematic reform plans for hospitals, health centres and emergency services. All of these will support emergency services to achieve the four hours waiting time target while efficiently serving the health of the local population. Two, it will focus attention on the areas, populations and patients in greater need of urgent and emergency services. This can potentially inform policies and actions of support, for example, improve access to other forms of health and social care, interventions and campaigns that will reduce the load on urgent and emergency services and better support the health of the population in northwest London.
