Public benefit statement
The purpose of this research project is to allow a greater understanding of patients that have 12 hour waits within Emergency Departments for attendances related to mental health (MH). We are developing a dataset that can be accessed by the two NWL Mental Health Trusts; Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust and West London NHS Trust. The dataset joins the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS) with data relating to referrals to the LPS within ED. Currently there is a national definition of MH-related emergency departments (ED) that we are monitored on nationally. However it can result in false positives as the criteria is broad and can encapsulate attendances not related to MH. Internally we currently monitor 12hr breaches using a referral to the Liaison Psychiatry Service (LPS) within ED. This will give the NWL integrated system to have a single joint view of 12hr MH-related breaches, which will allow the below benefits: - understand the differences between national and local view of MH breaches. - develop a better understanding of the delays in the pathway contributing to 12hr waits.
