Lay summary

Use the NWL dataset to evaluate the proportion of patients screened for CKD in NWL between April 2021-April 2022 and the subsequent management of those diagnosed with CKD.

Public benefit statement

In order to prevent the progression of CKD and the development of its associated cardiovascular complications, patients with risk factors for CKD need to be identified early in order to ensure timely management and initiation of prognostically beneficial medication. By mapping the clinical journey (including management/progression of CKD, co-morbidities developed and patient interaction with primary and secondary care) of those diagnosed with CKD in 2010 over a ten-year period, we aim to demonstrate the need for the development of patient care pathways to support interventions that increase earlier diagnosis and optimisation of CKD. Furthermore, by reviewing the management of patients with newly diagnosed CKD in the last financial year, we aim to determine the proportion of patients managed according to national guidelines and determine ways in which screening and management of CKD could be improved. Overall, we aim to demonstrate the need for improvements in the screening of patients at risk of CKD, thus facilitating earlier diagnosis and optimisation, a reduction in the proportion of patients developing advanced kidney disease and its associated morbidity and mortality and reducing costs over the medium term.
