This research project aims to deliver meaningful improvements in dementia patient care by tackling critical challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and support. The wider benefits of this research will be felt by the general and local population in North West London. Benefits to patients can include: • Improved access to timely and targeted care – Developing a more comprehensive understanding of dementia’s impact, particularly within the local community, will contribute to improved strategies for timely diagnosis and targeted care. Patients in North West London can benefit from enhanced access to care and support that is tailored to their needs. Version 4.0 – April 2023 Page 4 of 23 • Reduced stigma and increased awareness – Through building a better understanding of the disease and its symptoms, we will address associated stigma and increase public awareness. This will foster a more supportive environment for local population affected by dementia. • Enhanced post-diagnosis support – Insights from the research will alleviate the ‘vacuum effect’ in postdiagnosis support to ensure that individuals and their families receive the necessary assistance. Locally, outcomes of this research can address existing disparities in access to support and care quality. • Optimised treatment pathways – Comparative analyses with other health systems and benchmarking against other conditions will support the implementation of best practices and proven improved treatment pathways. Local patients can experience more effective, streamlined treatment options. This research will also ensure that improvements to the treatment pathway are aligned to NICE guidelines, ensuring consistent care plans and reviews. • Potential future breakthroughs – The projection of impact new treatments and additional funding will have, and the research outcomes overall, encourages innovative solutions and potential breakthroughs in dementia management. Patients in North West London will benefit from these advancements, particularly if new interventions and pilot programmes as part of these new solutions are implemented locally first.
