Lay summary

The goal of this project is to get a better understanding of UTI incidence, prevalence and recurrence in the community.

Public benefit statement

Without adequate research into the incidence of community based UTIs – there is a lack of adequate funding for diagnostics and better treatment options. Patients may be given an inappropriate amount of antibiotics, or dismissed, and often left to deal with the UTI on their own. This increases the risk of AMR bacteria, making future treatments more difficult. By understanding the data better, we want to raise develop better diagnostics and treatment methods for UTIs, in order to provide the correct antibiotics to people with UTIs. We also want to increase the awareness of doctors and pharmacists about the risk of improperly treating (and ignoring UTIs), improving patient’s lives, and reducing the time and money wasted by patients, and healthcare professionals. This should also reduce the amount of people showing up in A&E with acute UTI symptoms.
