Lay summary
We expect this project to contribute to existing evidence and lead to a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The findings will also be fed back to the local integrated care system inform service improvement, where hypertension is a priority condition.
Public benefit statement
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a serious medical condition that can raise a person’s risk of heart, brain, kidney and other diseases. Globally, hypertension is the leading preventable cause of cardiovascular disease (conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels) and premature death. The number of people with hypertension is growing internationally. Around a third of adults in England are estimated to have hypertension. As a result, hypertension is a priority both nationally and locally for the Northwest London Integrated Care System. The Northwest London WSIC de-identified dataset provides a valuable opportunity to use electronic health record data to better understand patterns and trends in who has hypertension, and what treatments they receive. In this project we aim to use statistical analyses to understand those patterns and trends, with a view to supporting the identification of opportunities to improve the care patients receive, and ultimately to improve their health outcomes. For example, we hope to be able to describe groups of patients who are not currently receiving treatment, but who may benefit from some treatment such as drugs or lifestyle changes. This work also has the potential to contribute to the use of WSIC data for measurement over time, to monitor and inform improvement.
