Public benefit statement
The proportion of young people in the UK experiencing mental health problems has increased in recent years. Sometimes these problems are so severe (in terms of endangering the young person or others) that it reaches the point of a mental health crisis that requires emergency healthcare. Mental health crisis is likely to be traumatic for a young person. Clinical teams looking after these CYP report that in many/most cases, the crisis might have been averted if needs had been identified and addressed earlier. This study will identify risk factors including previous contacts with NHS and social care, with the aim of informing NW London strategies to intervene earlier and avoid these crises, wherever possible. It will be valuable to identify from medical and social care records factors (such as patterns of utilisation of health services in the past) that may increase the risk of crisis. This evidence can be used to inform the provision of care and support for young people to try to reduce the likelihood of mental health crises occurring.
