Lay summary
Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide, and most patients are diagnosed when the disease has already spread (metastasised). Over the past decade, new treatments, such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, have started to improve survival, but access to these treatments and how they’re used can vary across hospitals and countries. This study looked at how people with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC) are diagnosed and treated across cancer centres in Europe. By using a standard set of important clinical data points collected from patient records, the study aimed to understand current treatment patterns, how closely care follows international guidelines, and what outcomes patients experience. It also helped test whether these data can be reliably collected and compared between centres.
Public benefit statement
This study helps us understand how advanced lung cancer is treated in real-life settings across Europe. By securely analysing patient data from multiple centres, it highlights how care varies, where improvements can be made, and how well current guidelines are being followed. These insights can support more consistent, high-quality care and help ensure that people with lung cancer get the best possible treatment, no matter where they are treated.
