Lay summary
Antibiotics are essential medicines used to treat infections caused by bacteria. However, using them too often or in the wrong way can lead to bacteria becoming resistant, making infections harder to treat. To help prevent this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified certain antibiotics that need to be closely monitored because they carry a higher risk of resistance. This study looked at how these antibiotics are being used across the UK. It aimed to track how many new people are starting these medicines, how long they take them for, and how the medicines are given. The study also looked at the characteristics of people taking these antibiotics and how antibiotic use has changed over time. This information will help support safe and appropriate use of antibiotics.
Public benefit statement
This study will provide important information about the use of commonly prescribed antibiotics that are linked to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance. By understanding how these antibiotics are used in real-world healthcare settings, including how often and by whom, we can help improve prescribing practices. The findings will support efforts to ensure antibiotics are used only when needed, helping to preserve their effectiveness for future generations and protect public health.
