Lay summary

There is variation in the type of heart attack management people who are frail (when the body is weaker and less able to recover from illness) or who have kidney disease receive when having a heart attack. This is because it is uncertain whether invasive procedures to fix the heart attack will cause harm among people living with frailty or kidney disease. The aim of this research is to explore differences in how people with heart attacks were managed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will find out if these differences were because people had kidney disease or frailty. We will also consider how pressures on hospital resources may have affected heart attack care. Finally, we will improve a large health database with better information on kidney disease to make future research better.

Public benefit statement

Our work will directly inform NHS services planning through our links to the NHS. Our work to improve the research database with better information on kidney disease will make future research related to kidney disease better. Our goal is to work in partnership with patients to help doctors provide better care for people with heart and kidney conditions.
