Lay summary
To evaluate the delivery, safety, and efficacy of virtual care, in the context of remote consultations, in diabetic pregnancies across North West London (NWL), and to understand its impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Public benefit statement
This study aims to assess how virtual care impacts maternal and baby outcomes of diabetic pregnancies in the North West London. Outcomes will include premature birth, delivery type (caesarean section vs vaginal birth), baby birth weight, the need for intensive care after delivery, and post-partum blood sugar control. By analysing how many women are receiving virtual care and how their outcomes compare to those receiving traditional in-person care, we can identify whether these digital tools are safe, effective, and reaching everyone equally, regardless of age, ethnicity, or background. We will also look at how women do after giving birth using the NHS diabetes prevention programme, and whether the virtual pathways helps prevent longer-term health issues like type 2 diabetes. It will also explore whether certain groups, based on clinical and sociodemographic factors like age and ethnicity, are having poorer outcomes when managed virtually as opposed to usual care. The findings will help inform strategies to improve antenatal care of diabetic pregnancies, leading to healthier pregnancies, safer deliveries, and improved long-term health for both mothers and their children. Outcomes will be published in peer-reviewed journals.
