Lay summary
We aim to assess dementia risk after pacemaker implantation using DISCOVER-NOW data, comparing paced vs non-paced patients, adjusting for clinical factors, and exploring how heart rate and blood pressure interact with dementia outcomes.
Public benefit statement
Therefore, this project will test how much needing a pacemaker increases the chance of developing dementia. If this is as high as we predict, it will provide strong evidence that more research in this area is vital. Also, test whether the heart rate and blood pressure may be important in affecting the risk of dementia in people with a pacemaker. If so, we will go on to do further studies, including clinical trials, to test whether changing the heart rate on a pacemaker may reduce the risk of dementia in the future.
