Lay summary
This project explores fit note patterns by demographics and regions, linking diagnoses to work absences. It supports WorkWell’s goal to reduce avoidable sickness, improve rehab pathways, and tackle economic inactivity among at-risk populations.
Public benefit statement
This work will directly inform the optimisation of occupational health pathways under the WorkWell Programme, a regional initiative aimed at improving employment outcomes among individuals experiencing long-term health conditions. Better understanding of sickness absence dynamics will enable NHS commissioners, local authorities, & employment support providers to align services more precisely to need, improve return-to-work support, and ultimately help reduce avoidable long-term worklessness. Given the strong evidence linking employment with physical & mental wellbeing, these insights are expected to contribute to improved population health, reduced health inequalities, and more efficient use of public resources.
