Lay summary
The aim is to investigate how the wider determinants of health influence the rates of disease and death in different ethnicities within a 12-month period. Ethnic health inequalities persist in developed countries, and most health research focuses on the biological causes of disease. However, there is increasing recognition that the wider determinants of health are an important factor in disease development in this group. The project aims to use wider determinants of health data such as income linked to information on hospital admissions. Using statistical analysis, the primary goal is to investigate how household income influence disease risk across the UK, with a particular emphasis on ethnic minority populations and cardiometabolic disease, a combination of diseases which affects multiple parts of the body at the same time such as heart disease and diabetes. Furthermore, understanding how income levels influences these risks will be conducted by examining the income records and their connection to healthcare data, we aim to uncover how economic factors contribute to ethnic health inequalities.
Public benefit statement
There is increasing evidence of ethnic health inequalities with gaps in understanding of why these health inequalities exist. Emerging evidence suggests that health inequalities may play a significant role in disease incidence for these groups. Identifying which factors may play a stronger role in disease incidence will help policymakers to reduce these inequalities.
