Lay summary
More accurate estimation of the likelihood of vaginal delivery after induction of labour (IOL) would be useful for women and clinicians, to help guide decision making and service provision. There are many factors predisposing the patient to caesarean section, particularly an unfavourable cervix. A recent US study (Levine 2018) describes development of a simple calculator to estimate risk of caesarean section after induction of labour in women who have an unfavourable cervix using key factors including Bishop score (a score of cervical favourability), parity, gestational age, body mass index and height. The aim of this study is to produce a validated model which will predict the risk of caesarean section in women undergoing IOL for the UK population. Such a model will be valuable in counselling patients undergoing or considering induction of labour.
