Public benefit statement
DHD usually starts in childhood and can continue into adulthood and is characterised by persistent patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity which can make daily focus, organisation and self-regulation challenging. My research is about describing the trends in prescribing ADHD medication, particularly during times like when people with ADHD move from child to adult healthcare services. I want to see if there are common points in people’s lives when they tend to stop taking their ADHD medication, and what actions might make that less likely to happen. I would like to use health data from Northwest London because it includes a very diverse population, which helps make the findings relevant to many different population groups. I’m interested in looking at whether factors like age, gender, socioeconomic background, or ethnicity might influence how likely people might adhere to their ADHD treatment. I also want to see if stopping medication is linked to more serious problems, like being hospitalised for a road traffic accident. By finding out more about when people stop their medication, I hope to build upon existing research that seeks to understand what support people with ADHD might need. My goal is to provide information that could help researchers, doctors and healthcare providers better support people with ADHD so they can stay on their medication when it’s important. If we know the times when people are more likely to stop, and who might be most at risk, then this information can be used to support efforts in providing help earlier and improve care for people with ADHD.
