Lay summary
Project to aid NW London GPs: (1) develop a transformer model predicting prediabetes after statin initiation using pseudonymised data; (2) infer the causal link between statins and prediabetes using DR‑CFR, NOTEARS‑MLP and target‑trial emulation.
Public benefit statement
The project aims to assist general practitioners in optimizing statin-associated lipid-lowering strategies and preventing the onset of prediabetes in North West London. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) account for nearly a quarter of all deaths in the UK. Statins are recommended as the frontline therapy for CVD prevention, with more than five million users nationwide as of 2024.
