Lay summary
The aim is to use data analytics to gain insights into the performance, impact of critical care pts across the NWL healthcare system. This will facilitate the development of more precisely defined pathways, ultimately ensuring improved flow of patients.
Public benefit statement
National modelling has revealed that London possesses insufficient Adult Critical Care relative to its population needs. Prior to making investments in additional beds and ensuring equitable access for an aging population with increasing acuity, it is imperative to develop comprehensive datasets that demonstrate the Return of Investment of the current Adult Critical Care model. This analysis should focus on patient outcomes across the entire healthcare system, with particular emphasis on social care, rather than being confined to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). More in detail, we aim to bring benefits to patients by: Improving patient experience By understanding both patient risk and patient outcomes from either side of the critical care stay (pre/rehabilitation). This includes understanding patient trajectories through surgical and emergency pathways, acuity changes, and recovery profiles. Improve outcomes By identifying opportunities for redesigning surgical pathways to improve flow, hospital transfers, and safer discharge. By improving post-Discharge Activity: Analysing post-discharge GP attendances using primary care data to identify high-risk patients and opportunities for follow-up and readmission prevention.
