Lay summary
We aim to guide ICB decision‑making on obesity management. Using real‑world NWL data and validated modelling, we’ll assess who could benefit from treatment and the healthcare use linked to obesity‑related conditions, supporting evidence‑based policy.
Public benefit statement
This research will help decide about optimal interventions for obesity and to whom these should be offered. As a result, NHS managers will be able to make sure resources are used in the best possible way. The results might show that offering GLP-1 treatment to more patients, rather than keeping to a very limited number of patients, is a better use of NHS resources. If this is the case, many patients could benefit from having better access to obesity treatments on the NHS. Alternatively, our proposed research may show that expanded eligibility of GLP-1 therapies for obesity is not a good use of NHS resources, compared to alternative approaches. In both cases, planning and allocation of resources could be underpinned by more robust evidence.
