Lay summary

Most potential deceased organ donors are missed due to inefficient manual processes, resulting in lost transplant opportunities and unfulfilled donor wishes, as shown in a previous UHS audit. Ultimate aim: to develop an electronic tool that screens patients for donation eligibility and alerts clinicians when a potential donor passes away, helping to improve identification and increase donation rates. Audit aim: to determine the accuracy with which simple structured data available at the time of death can be used to predict donation eligibility.

Public benefit statement

The audit aims to increase eye donations, which will reduce waiting times and workload, and allow more people to benefit from sight-saving transplants. Demonstrating predictive capability of routinely collected data could assist funding application for further research/clinical tool development.
