Lay summary

Understanding why some are more likely to experience more rapid decline allows us to provide PLWD and their loved ones with better predictions following a diagnosis and develop targeted interventions to prevent unnecessary hospitalisation

Public benefit statement

Dementia affects 944,000 people in the UK and over 50 million globally (Alzheimer’s Research UK, 2022). At any point, one in four hospital beds are thought to be occupied by people living with dementia (PLWD) (Lakey, 2009); an estimated 42% of individuals over 70 with unplanned admissions to acute services are PLWD (Sampson et al., 2009). Alzheimer’s Research UK estimates that 20% of hospital admissions in PLWD are for preventable conditions such as urinary tract infections, which are associated with increased all-cause mortality if not detected and treated early (Gharbi et al., 2019). In the absence of any current treatment to prevent or cure dementia, there is an urgent need for greater focus on the real‐world outcomes in PLWD.
