Public benefit statement
The aim of this study is to provide a general overview of the treatment pathways for patients with cardiovascular disease and related conditions. This will provide clarity around what is currently happening in the healthcare system, while also providing opportunity to see which factors (e.g. type of treatment, inpatient attendance) most affect clinical outcomes. This will help to identify the optimal care pathways and areas for improvement which will directly benefit the quality of patient care and hopefully speed of care delivery. Such insights can also be used in future work to redesign care pathways for care improvement collaboratively with patients. A secondary aim of this work is to test the feasibility of applying machine learning to predict future clinical outcomes. The ability to predict clinical outcomes allows us to estimate the potential impact for changes in treatment pathways. It also allows risk stratification and potential case finding of patients for review and care. If proven to be successful, this could open doors to future studies looking at the possibility of predicting potential impact of any proposed changes to the treatment pathways to outcomes such as hospitalisations, which could be useful for the local NHS system planners and ultimately benefitting quality of patient care.
