Public benefit statement
This project aims to establish the time points that patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease undergo surgery in the northwest London population in relation to disease duration and age at surgery. We also aim to describe and understand prescribing patterns of advanced therapies in Inflammatory bowel disease. Analysis of the data will primarily be descriptive, with the aim of establishing links between the prescribing patterns and the age at which patients receive surgery. With the addition of a multitude of newer, advanced therapies over the last two decades, we expect that patients receive surgery at a later stage in their disease course and in their life. Establishing this data will help us understand disease outcomes and risks to patients undergoing surgery. Understanding the age at which patients receive surgery in relation to their disease duration may help plan for appropriate measures prior to surgery. It would also provide information regarding the risks associated with undergoing surgery at different ages or time point during the disease course of inflammatory bowel disease. Results from this study will provide further information for clinicians when deciding treatment strategies for patients with IBD. • Assess the impact of the introduction of newer advanced therapies over the past two decades on the timing of surgical interventions. • Explore whether patients are now undergoing surgery later in their disease course and at an older age. • Generate insights to improve understanding of disease progression, treatment outcomes, and surgical risks in the IBD patient population. • Helps identify the typical age at which patients undergo surgery in relation to the duration of their disease. • Supports better planning and implementation of appropriate pre-surgical measures. • Provides insight into the risks associated with surgery at different ages or stages of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). • Offers valuable data to inform clinical decision-making and treatment planning for patients with IBD. • Contributes to more personalized and timely care strategies for improving patient outcomes
