Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are among the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders. ASD is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction with restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities; ADHD characterized by deficits in attention, organization, activity levels and impulse control. Both disorders are commonly associated with sleep problems, especially short sleep duration, in adults and school-aged children. Less is known in preschoolers. In addition, it is not clear whether sleep troubles are risk factors, consequences or comorbidities of the neurodevelopmental disorder.
Very few studies with rather small sample sizes have previously examined the longitudinal association between sleep and ASD symptoms/diagnosis and ADHD symptoms/diagnosis. With combining the large amount of available data from five European birth cohorts in our analyses (with an individual meta-analysis using DataShield)), we are using an innovative approach to fill knowledge gaps and bring new insight into this research field.
