Lay summary

Background Asthma is a highly heritable disease with parental asthma being the strongest known risk factor for asthma in the offspring. Maternal asthma is a stronger risk factor than paternal asthma suggesting a role of epigenetic effects. Furthermore, clinical studies have suggested that parental effects might be sex-specific.
