This study will examine how the health care system functions in the provision of care for older people with mental health needs in the emergency department (including prehospital care) and the extent to which this care is person centred. Each one of these areas has substantial amounts of qualitative and quantitative research literature relating to aspects of care. This proposal is original as there was no UK study found which examined the aspects of older people with mental health needs in ED from the perspective of EMS staff and the older person. This study will be conducted in two phases. Phase one will include an analysis of the statistics from the HSC in Northern Ireland, while phase two will interview emergency medical services (EMS) staff, the older person and carers. The benefit of carrying out this research is that the system which provides care for older people with mental health needs in Emergency Department (ED) will be explored. The information gleaned from the study could inform how policy and education is developed at a local level. This application is sought for access to Honest Broker Data HSC Regional Data Warehouse Datasets for phase one of the study.
