Lay summary
The NICOLA Study, short for the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA) is being conducted by the Centre for Public Health in Queen’s University Belfast. NICOLA recruited a random, stratified sample of 8,500 people, over the age of 50 and residing in Northern Ireland and follows them into old age, making a comprehensive assessment of their physical and mental health, their lifestyles and their social and economic decision making. This NICOLA linkage methodology aims to link a response/ non response indicator to a series of data sets held by the Business Services Organisation in order to determine to what extent health selection bias has had an effect on the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing, Wave 1 cohort.
Public benefit statement
The public interest in this proposed data linkage relates to the assessment of the external validity of the NICOLA study cohort to the general population of over 50’s living in residential properties (i.e. not communal establishments) in Northern Ireland. This underlying reassurance is critical to its future utilisation as a resource for HSC policy makers for that population.
