Summary

Comparison of fear of falling and Tinetti scores in adults completing hospital-based and home-based physiotherapy. A dataset extracted for studies in physiotherapy. To analyse data for changes in fear of falling and Tinetti scores following treatment, in either a home-based or hospital-based setting.

Documentation

Research suggests older people, aged >60 contributed to 647,721 unintentional falls in the UK in 1999, costing the UK government £981 million, with the NHS incurring 59.2% of these costs, while these numbers are estimated to increase with age. While fear of falling has revealed to be a direct result of inactivity in older adults, therefore experiencing deconditioning and potentially increase risk of falls.

While recent prevalence of fear of falling is estimated to be 20% to 85% in older adults, resulting in mental, physical, and psychosocial consequence. Therefore, the project will investigate the effects of home-based physiotherapy, and hospital-based physiotherapy on fear of falling and Tinetti scores, on patients referred from an inpatient setting that meet the criteria for the service.

While there is no current standardised approach and limited research to suggest one setting is more efficient to the other, it is hypothesis of this project, is one rehabilitation setting will be significantly more effective in patient rehabilitation than the other.
