Summary

The Substance Misuse Data Set captures data relating to all individuals (clients), both young persons and adults, presenting for substance misuse treatment in Wales.

Documentation

The Substance Misuse Data Set (SMDS) (also known as Welsh National Database for Substance Misuse - WNDSM) captures information relating to a client journey in a substance misuse agency. This journey is made up of a number of ‘events’ – one referral, one assessment, one (or more) Treatment Modalities, multiple Treatment Outcomes Profile (TOPs) and one discharge.

Welsh providers delivering substance misuse treatment and who are in receipt of Welsh Government substance misuse revenue funding are required to submit the Dataset.

Treatment Outcomes Profiles are only required to be completed for Adults (age 16 and over) in receipt of structured treatments.

A Data Explained report on SMDS is available here: https://phw.nhs.wales/publications/publications1/data-explained-welsh-national-database-for-substance-misuse-wndsm-data-quality-audit-and-considerations/

Access request cost
Data provision is free from SAIL. Overall project costing depends on the number of people that require access to the SAIL Gateway, the activities that SAIL needs to complete (e.g. loading non-standard datasets), data refreshes, analytical work required, disclosure control process, and special case technological requirements.
Access method category
TRE/SDE
Access service description
The SAIL Databank is powered by the UK Secure e-Research Platform (UKSeRP). Following approval through safeguard processes, access to project-specific data within the secure environment is permitted using two-factor authentication.
