How to request access to Cohort Discovery
Access built on trusted governance
Cohort Discovery uses a proportionate governance approach based on the Five Safes Framework. This ensures data is used responsibly while still enabling researchers to move quickly and efficiently.
What you need to apply
To access the Cohort Discovery Service, you must demonstrate your Safe People status. This involves:
- Being a recognised researcher, NHS analyst or equivalent
- Having a complete Gateway user profile
- Providing supporting credentials where relevant (e.g. your ORCID record)
What you’re applying for
Your application confirms that you will only use Cohort Discovery for estimating the size of populations relevant to a particular research question ( a Safe Project) and that any resulting research or clinical trial will deliver public benefit as defined by the National Data Guardian for health and social care.
What happens after you apply
- Your application will be reviewed based on your Gateway profile and submitted information
- If anything is unclear, we will contact you for further information
- In some cases, access may not be granted if eligibility criteria are not met and we reserve the right not to provide access if your Safe People or Safe Project status is indeterminate
This approach ensures that Cohort Discovery remains secure and trusted service.
